Window Challenge:
Remove existing 18’ tall single pane wood window unit and replace with maintenance free energy efficient window without changing the basic look or design, and while matching new windows for a new addition. Window was situated on a wall that spanned two floors and a staircase.
Our challenges included getting the look right, making sure it was structurally sound, and making sure the window arrived fitting into an opening that could not be changed, as well as the challenge of working with a window of that size. Another wild card was how to install a unit that actually spanned a staircase landing.
Solution:
Use Weather Shield aluminum clad three piece unit with tempered Low e insulated glass, aluminum Brickmould, and Simulated Divided lite. New addition used Weather Shield aluminum clad double hung windows.
The Look: A one piece unit was not possible, due to the weight of the aluminum cladding and tempered insulated glass. We worked closely with the architect to provide some options for using a two piece unit, while designing a divided lite pattern that would match the design intent of the original. We proposed a two piece unit that has site lines similar to the triple hung windows that were already in the church. The mull was designed specifically to offer structural support as well as imitate the exiting triple hung units.
Structure, Fit and Installation: The removal of the existing was performed with our experienced company installers. The new unit was mulled in place in the field, using structural support. We met the challenge of the stairwell installation by applying the jamb extensions in the field, as each level had a different jamb depth. The aluminum brickmould was shipped loose and applied in the field, which presented additional challenges with access.
Result:
Beautiful, structurally sound, maintenance-free window unit that will last for years to come.
